It Begins

So.  This blog wasn't even an idea in my head until last night.  I made it this afternoon and then wondered what my first post would be.  After a minute or so I decided that I should just post on why the blog got started, what it's going to be about, and explain the silly name.

Last night I was hanging out with a group of friends at Whataburger, which for any non-American readers is a semi-popular fast food chain that's spread across the States.  It's more popular in Texas, which is where it started out.  Anyway.  The discussions varied, but eventually the topic fell on blogs.  I mentioned that I'd always thought about having a blog but was never really good at "journaling" or writing down my thoughts in a journal-like format.  I was told that I couldn't get better without practice, which is very true.  Anyway, the topic changed and I forgot all about it until this afternoon.

Still, I thought it over and wondered what I would even write about.  Bloggers usually have a niche of sorts to attract readers that aren't their friends, (not that I don't love you guys...) and I wondered what sort of niche I would have.  After a while I just decided that I would be my own niche and that I really didn't mind if total strangers followed me or not.  Lots of people just write about themselves or their lives in their blogs and don't really look to attract a sort of reader.  This could change in the future but for now I'm happy just writing about me.

So, I decided to go with Blogger since it's Google and I just got Google+ a little over a week ago, so I thought I might as well just integrate everything.  I listened to Evanescence's new single on loop as I set up the blog, deciding the name and then the layout and design.  It's actually still on loop as I'm writing this.  It's actually been on loop since Monday night.  I'm a bit obsessed.

Now, the name was an issue.  I didn't want anything witty, but I didn't want something bland and dull.  I wanted something interesting or even odd - which I think is what I have.  See, my favorite creatures out of the entire animal kingdom are jellyfish.  It's an odd creature to like over anything else, and unless I suddenly go into marine biology I may never ever meet another soul with the same preference for jellies.

Jellyfish.  That's what I had, but I couldn't just have that as my title.  I needed more.  So I added and.  So I had Jellyfish and.  Still not a great title, so I decided to find some other odd thing to stick in there that still somewhat relates to me.  Instead of choosing another animal I decided to look at insects.  I'm not a big insect person.  I like two insects out of the thousands of species if insects.  One of them is the bee.  I like bees.  Mostly because they make me sad, because they're disappearing, and that's sad.  (You will soon learn that sad things make me happy if you don't know that already.)  Bees are also kind of adorable, so there's that too.  I don't like wasps, but bees I can dig.  Bees have to sacrifice themselves for the sake of their hives.  Wasps are just jerks.  However, I didn't want to title my blog Jellyfish and Bees.  I didn't like the sound of it and I had a distant fear that Spongebob fans would flock to me as if I were the disturbing little sponge himself.

I was then left with butterflies.  I love butterflies, I do, for several reasons.  Aside from being nice to look at, there is all the symbolism associated with them as well.  Rebirth, transformation, ect.  They also symbolize the human mind or soul in some cultures.  The butterfly also has negative symbolism in other cultures, such as representing death, which I think is just funny.

Jellyfish and Butterflies.  I liked it.  So that's what it is now.  Also, sorry to anybody coming here thinking this blog is about jellyfish and/or butterflies.  It's not.

Now I have this blog and I will soon have a first post up.  I now have to actively look for things to write about or else this blog will die, and there is a big chance that it will, so don't hold your breath or anything.  I will try to keep it alive though, unlike certain friends of mine who started blogs but no longer post in them.  Like Chad.

Now that I think about it I have a lot more to write about than I realize, so maybe this whole blog thing is a good idea.

Before I go, please wish my sister a happy birthday in your mind... or you could put it in a comment if you want.  Today is also the 222nd day of the year, which is bad, because 222 haunts me regularly.  Coincidence that my sister was born on this day?  I think not.  Will I die a horrible 222-related death?  Probably.  On second thought... maybe this blog is an awful idea...
